If you’re lucky enough to drive around Oahu, you already know the island offers some of the most beautiful scenic drives anywhere. From coastal highways to mountain overlooks, the views are incredible. But while the scenery is amazing, some roads can be rough on your vehicle.

If you want to enjoy the ride without wrecking your suspension, here are a few best scenic drives on Oahu that balance beauty with relatively smoother roads.

Best Scenic Drives on Oahu That Are Easier on Your Car Suspension

1. Tantalus Drive (Round Top Drive)

One of the most iconic Oahu scenic drives, Tantalus offers sweeping views of Honolulu, Diamond Head, and the ocean. The road is winding but mostly well-paved. Take it slow and enjoy the lookouts along the way.

2. Kalanianaole Highway (East Side Coastal Route)

Driving toward the east side offers a relaxing coastal cruise with views of turquoise water, lava rock formations, and dramatic cliffs. This highway is typically smooth and perfect for a scenic cruise.

3. H-3 Freeway

Often considered one of the most beautiful highways in the country, H-3 cuts through lush mountain valleys with towering green cliffs. It’s a modern highway with good pavement, making it easy on your suspension while still delivering jaw-dropping scenery.

4. North Shore Coastal Drive

Cruising past Haleiwa and along the North Shore gives you that classic surf town vibe. The road is mostly smooth, and on a clear day you’ll pass beaches, food trucks, and some of the island’s most famous surf spots.

5. Makapuu Coastal Drive

Short but stunning, this stretch of road offers incredible ocean views and dramatic cliffs. Early morning or sunset drives here are especially beautiful.

Quick Tips to Protect Your Suspension on Scenic Drives

Even on the best scenic drives on Oahu, road conditions can change quickly. Keep these tips in mind:

  • Slow down on unfamiliar roads

  • Avoid potholes whenever possible

  • Maintain proper tire pressure

  • Listen for unusual suspension noises

  • Keep your vehicle maintained and inspection-ready

A well-maintained vehicle not only makes the drive smoother, it also helps ensure your car passes its vehicle safety check inspection when it’s time.
